Breathing in sitting meditation is the anchor you use to steady your concentration and chase away your monkey mind that is always chattering, always chattering mostly about nothing at all, just noise. Inhaling brings the air into the inner world and exhale into the outer world but in reality there is only one world for the air to go into and come out of. In sitting meditation your mind watches the movement of the air as it comes in and goes out over and over and over. The repetition of your breathing will help you gain concentration both for your meditation and for your life outside of meditation. A good tip when learning meditation is to do it with a group of others, this helps make the task easier when you first get started.
